Words... and thier meanings

The funniest thing about living here and being able to get to know the girls from England (and having my son go to a traditional "English" school and Pajha in a school full of all different cultures) is some of the new words we have all learned! Here are a few of them....

  1. Rubber. Peyton came home from school one day and we were doing his homework, he asked me for a rubber. Excuse me... a WHAT? "Mom, I need a rubber"... I remember feeling so confused... and worried, what on earth is he talking about? An eraser... Phew! He still calls them rubbers. I need to work on that before we move back to the states.
  2. Pants. What we call pants to them are underwear, or panties.
  3. Trump, or Pump... that is what we would call having gas...
  4. Dust bin or rubbish... that is a garbage can. Pajha calls it a dust bin. For the longest time I had no clue what she was talking about because the way she says it sounds like daspin.
  5. A "Mummy" is not a corpse wrapped in cloth... it's me... I see the resemblance at times
  6. When you order a chicken fillet or fish fillet, they don't pronounce it as we do (fill-ay)... they say it just as it sounds (fill-et). I've wondered why no one understood what I was asking for. Go ahead try saying it chicken fill-et... wierd huh? I still can't do it, just doesn't feel right!
  7. Aluminum foil... they say it Aluminium (Al-oo-min-i-um). Strange!
  8. Bonnet... no it isn't a hat they wore back in the days. That is the hood of your car!
  9. And finally Boot.... nope not the ones you wear on your feet but a boot is the trunk of the car!

I am sure there are many more but these are some of my favorite to debate with my friends!

I love your "corpse" comment! I totally feel like that today. Whenever I watch the Wiggles' older DVDs they make me laugh because of the words they use. They say aluminum the same way!!

You make me smile! I love hearing all the fun things you do, see, say...I use to be envious, but now I just take it as a blessing and so grateful that your life has led you to such great things and we get to "share" in a way your life! It will be so fun to have you home - I'm afraid we will be boring after a while - but then again - life here is anything but boring - just a whole different type of "EXCITEMENT!" Thanks for sharing all your blessings with us - we love it! I've missed you online....where ya been? Well, I hope to catch ya soon - have a great DAY! - oh - I mean EVENING to you!
LOVE YA!

What a fun list to read. It must be so much fun to live in another country and experience a different culture. Have your kids become accustomed to the accent there?
